In reply to <a href="https://blog.saxtonstudio.com/a-few-words-about-the-self-publishing-buzz/#comment-103">Sue Collier</a>.

Appreciate your feedback, Sue. And you are absolutely right that offset printing is another way to go, which will indeed keep your per book cost lower than POD. I didn't even mention that direction, did I!... I should have. Although the reason I neglected to was based on my thinking in terms of production costs / upfront expense. Part of the appeal for POD is the low initial investment. Not sure a lot of people right now would necessarily consider the higher cost - albeit terrific quality - of offset. But for those who can, it's a great self-publishing tool.

Thanks so much for weighing in!

Although I do agree with much of what you say, I disagree with this: "Your book will not find its way to a Barnes & Noble near you. Amazon, yes. Physical bookstores, no." Yes, the cost (and lack of returns) of POD publishing does make it prohibitive for brick-and-mortar stores to carry self-published books. However, savvy authors know that is not their only option. Offset printing enables authors to keep book prices in line with other books in their same genre.

I fully agree with this statement: "There’s a great myth that being traditionally published alleviates the need for an author to be involved in promoting their book." So many authors are completely unaware of this. The fact that they will be doing much of the promotions themselves anyway really does make self-publishing--particularly nonfiction--an excellent option as they can potentially make a lot more money because they keep all the profits rather than just a small percentage.
