Fairy News!

I’m officially excited ~ because my second book, A Book of Fairies, has virtually sold out and is being reprinted!!

A second edition. Wow, I have to admit that feels great.

My heartfelt thanks to my publisher, Shenanigan Books, for believing in me from the start with The Book of Mermaids, and to anyone and everyone who’s bought A Book of Fairies and helped make it this far. It may not have been discovered by the New York Times yet (ha ha!), but to know it’s being enjoyed by thousands of people truly, truly means the world to me. Thank you!

Great (& great fun) Design

Here’s something I wish I’d created. I absolutely love this minimalistic children’s story poster series by designer Christian Jackson. They’re clever, delightful, artistic and clean in a wonderfully organic way.

Mockingbird’s First Day of Spring

This little fellow is hoping for sunshine. Or maybe he’s up early looking for that first worm. Or could be he’s getting a little bored waiting for the rest of the book to be finished (the one where he has a starring role)…. after those silly dragons have their day in the sun, of course.

(With a few word substitutions, not such different wishes than some of our own, eh?)

Ah, spring ~ full of hopes and dreams, delights and newnesses (even a new word for you) ~ happy first day of it!

Doing What You Love

“let the beauty of what you love be what you do.”  ~ Rumi

I came across these sketches the other night .. a couple of the original pencil drawings for A Book of Fairies; and was reminded how much I enjoyed creating that book.

They also reminded me that loving what you do can translate into something that’s not only real and viable~ but with enough good spirit (backed by solid effort … and maybe a muse or two), it can also touch others in ways you hadn’t imagined.

How do you measure that? It comes unexpected, in the eyes of a delighted child, eager to share a story about the mermaid they saw in their grandfather’s creek, or the child who sends you a hand-drawn thank you with fairy crowns and sparkles, or the teen who wants to be an author or an illustrator too.

And all of that makes all the years of well-loved pencil scribbling all the more meaningful. It makes doing what you love make sense.

Witt World Whirlwind

Yea, say that ten times fast! Or, rolling more easily off the tongue, you could say the whirlwind Witttenberg University book-signing weekend went very well. And Wittenberg is still a beautiful campus, with classic Ohio friendliness in tact.

My book-signing was set for 10AM on the Saturday of Homecoming Weekend, and I was so pleased that a good number of people got themselves up and out in time to be there. It was a terrific crowd, in fact! I loved seeing old, familiar faces and meeting new ones. I loved that they liked my books. :  )

I also loved meeting a particular young girl who adores mermaids and aspires to be an author/illustrator, and loved that she gave me a book she wrote (complete with drawings). That was an especially precious moment, in a weekend of special moments, memories revisited and memories made.

Book Signing at Wittenberg University

My years at Wittenberg University were among life’s best. So I’m psyched to be heading back to my Alma Mater this month for Homecoming Weekend ~ this time to sign books, instead of study them! Here are the details:

Saturday, October 22  /  10:00 – 11:00 am  /  Wittenberg Bookstore

The timing coincides perfectly with my newest release, 52 Weeks of Peace.  They’re also stocking my 2 children’s books, a toy, and a sampling of fun merchandise. (btw, you might want to check out my “where in the world is peace?” campaign, and join in!). And how cool that Dr. Kinnison is scheduled to sign his work from 11-12. I’m certainly in good company.

 

Ohio people (and Wittenbergers in general) are one of the nicest collective bunches on the planet, and one of the main reasons I chose Wittenberg way back when. So if you can, please stop by and say hello. I’d love to see you!
